AGL Energy Limited is facing opposition from the Wollondilly Council concerning its proposal to construct a 300 megawatts (MW) gas-fired power plant at Leafs Gully in the Campbelltown Area of New South Wales. The proposal is currently on public exhibition with the Department of Planning. Michael Banasik, the mayor of Wollondilly, stated that the council is worried about the adverse impact the plant will have on public health, the environment and land values.
Banasik said “There are better areas for these type of developments, they shouldn't be near a residential area. That area between Appin and Campbelltown area is earmarked in the Macarthur south area for development, so I don't think you should be putting gas plants in the backyard of fairly dense population areas such as Campbelltown.”
Banasik also stated that the council is seeking a commission of inquiry into the plan, which would enable the public to voice their opinion.
He said “We're putting a submission into the Department of Planning opposing the gas plant on environmental, air quality, social and possible affects on land values, and we're also calling for a commission of inquiry if the Government thinks the development has got some legs.”
The gas-fired power plant will be evaluated by the planning minister as a major project.
